Mother's Day Mania

Mother’s day is around the corner, and even though it is a faux holiday created by Hallmark to boost its business, it is still worth paying resects to all mothers out there who devoted so much into our families. Hallmark isn’t that big in Taiwan, so they are not getting their share of sales boost here, but the department stores are sure taking advantage of this event!

Every year there are 2 big sales occasions in the department stores in Taiwan, Annual and mother’s day sales. The cosmetics and beauty departments are amongst the most popular buys since counters usually combine various “gift sets” that includes half a dozen travel size samples when you purchase a regular size product. In addition, if you spend up to a certain amount, you will also receive gift vouchers which you will be able to use towards your next purchase.

I always think that Asian people are great at marketing and the consumer loyalty departments. Back in New York, I would never spend over US$100 on makeup because the three digit number just sounds too crazy. But here in Taiwan, US$100 will usually qualify you for a VIP, and you will receive free samples every month, beauty consultation, product launch events, which all require a visit back to the counter and spend more!! So I have become a beauty victim, trapped in the ever changing and wonderful world of cosmetics and skincare and I have a growing amount of “inventory” piled up in the corner of my closet, far from my sight.
